Following Elliot’s unsuccessful search for Jacob on ship manifests, Kat redirected his efforts towards finding Thomas Coyle, suspecting a connection to Jacob. Her intuition proved correct: documents revealed that Coyle arrived on the ship Bella Donna in 1814, paying for Jacob’s passage home and explaining his presence in the past.

Kat, awaiting Jacob’s return, stumbled upon his childhood sneakers buried in the ground, confirming his presence. Upon receiving news of the ship’s arrival, Kat eagerly awaited Jacob’s return on the shore. However, her joy turned to dismay as Jacob, upon sighting her, averted his gaze and remained silent. Before she could approach him, British soldiers arrived and arrested Jacob for treason.

Spencer Macpherson, portraying adult Jacob, discussed his character’s highly anticipated introduction, the evolution since his childhood, and the poignant reunion with Kat.

Before landing the role, Macpherson wasn’t deeply familiar with the show but recognized a resemblance between himself and Remy Smith, who portrayed young Jacob. He conducted research on the historical context of 1814 and aimed to maintain tonal consistency with other actors. Drawing inspiration from Smith’s portrayal, Macpherson infused Jacob with a mischievous charm while acknowledging the 25-year gap since his childhood. He described Jacob as contemplative, with a subtle blend of past and present influences in his demeanor and speech.

Adapting to life in the past, Jacob suppressed memories of his former life, grappling with the trauma of displacement. Despite the challenges, he found solace and belonging in his new environment, considering it his home.

The pivotal moment of Jacob’s reunion with Kat reflected his internal conflict and trauma, as he struggled to reconcile past memories with his current reality. Macpherson shared that filming the scene was emotional, with genuine reactions from co-star Chyler Leigh, who plays Kat. As the series progresses, viewers will witness the evolving dynamics between Kat and Jacob, tinged with bittersweetness as they navigate their fractured relationship.

Episode 6 picks up with Jacob facing the consequences of his actions, including arrest for treason as a result of his involvement in smuggling. Amidst the turmoil, The Way Home promises further exploration of Jacob’s journey and the challenges he faces in the past.
