Gareth Bale, the five-time Champions League winner and Welsh football legend, has retired at 33. On Monday, the forward announced his retirement from both club and international football on social media, reflecting on the “best moments of my life” he had experienced through the sport. His career kicked off in England with Southampton, but it was at Tottenham where Bale earned his name. In 2013, he was signed by Real Madrid for a record-breaking fee and went on to win three La Liga titles and five Champions League titles, forming a formidable attacking trio with Ronaldo and Benzema.

In 2022, Gareth Bale returned to Tottenham before transferring to Los Angeles FC of the Major League Soccer. He holds the record for most international caps for Wales with 111 and after his departure, steered them to their first World Cup appearance in 64 years, which was held in Qatar 2022.

Expressing my deep appreciation to those that have contributed to my development over time appears to be unachievable. Ever since I was nine, I have been dreaming of advancing my career, and I am incredibly grateful to all those who enabled me to make my dreams a reality. I look forward to the new chapter that awaits me with enthusiasm, full of change and new experiences.

Gareth Bale had an array of remarkable goals throughout his career, with a remarkable bicycle kick at the 2018 Champions League final versus Liverpool being particularly memorable.

He was renowned for his speed, strength and accuracy at his peak, and although his physical condition has deteriorated, he has represented Wales with distinction.

In 2016 and 2020, Bale was the leader of his nation as they made it to the semi-finals of the European Cup.

His biggest ambition was to play in the World Cup, and that dream ultimately came true in Qatar, where he captained his team and scored the first Welsh World Cup goal since 1958 against the USA.

Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington praised Gareth Bale, whose career at LAFC concluded in dramatic fashion with a last-minute goal that helped the team clinch the Major League Soccer Cup for the first time in November 2022. “It was a privilege to have such an outstanding, dynamic and exciting player finish their career with a title for LAFC,” Thorrington said in a statement, wishing Bale, Emma and their family the greatest of luck with their future plans.
