The iconic Peter King recently announced his retirement. Known as the voice behind the widely read “Monday Morning Quarterback” for Sports Illustrated from 1997 to 2018, King rebranded the column as “Football Morning in America” upon moving to NBC Sports in 2018.

In a recent appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, the 66-year-old King delved into a myriad of topics, ranging from his memorable encounter with Boomer Esiason in 1984 to his thoughts on the enigmatic Bill Belichick and the controversial practice of court storming in college basketball.

Reflecting on his four-decade-long career covering the NFL, King shared the one burning question he still harbors regarding Bill Belichick’s involvement in the Spygate scandal of 2007.

“I would really want to know why (former New England coach) Bill Belichick felt the need to videotape sidelines when he already was the most brilliant defensive coach, maybe of all time? That will always confuse me,” remarked King, referring to the scandal where the Patriots were caught illegally videotaping opponents during games, resulting in hefty fines and penalties from the NFL.

Despite Belichick’s indiscretions, King acknowledged his unparalleled coaching prowess but questioned the wisdom behind his actions during the Spygate saga.

King also expressed bewilderment at the lack of interest shown by NFL teams, particularly the Washington Commanders, in hiring Belichick following his departure from the Patriots.

“I guess there is,” King pondered when asked if there’s a chance Belichick has coached his last NFL game. “Because how in the world could there be seven openings other than New England’s, and he gets one formal interview? I keep wondering. You’re Josh Harris (Washington Commanders owner). You just paid $6 billion for this football team. Explain to me why you wouldn’t sit in a room with Bill Belichick for a day? Or for six hours? At the very least, to simply download his brain. I will never understand why Washington did not interview Bill Belichick.”

Aside from his musings on football, King didn’t shy away from criticizing the NCAA’s stance on court storming and expressed his disbelief at Chip Kelly’s recent career move.

As King bids farewell to his illustrious career, he leaves behind a legacy as one of the last of his breed—a columnist who set the standard for long-form sports journalism. As Patrick aptly remarked, “Peter was Old School.”
