Lyon is exploring the possibility of reuniting with Karim Benzema, marking another potential departure of a high-profile player from the Saudi Pro League this month. Discussions have been initiated for a deal that could bring the former France forward back to his childhood club, but financial complexities may pose challenges to the transfer.
Benzema, who commenced his career in Lyon’s academy, joined Al-Ittihad from Real Madrid on a three-year deal last summer. At 36, the striker, who won five Champions Leagues with Madrid after leaving Lyon in 2009, was part of the influx of top talent moving from Europe to Saudi Arabia last year. Al-Ittihad is among the clubs controlled by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, offering lucrative contracts to attract prominent players.
Despite the financial allure, it did not prevent former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson from leaving Al-Ettifaq last week to join Ajax. While Aymeric Laporte expressed frustration over life in the Saudi league, Cristiano Ronaldo of Al-Nassr has spoken positively about it.
Benzema’s situation drew attention when he took an unauthorized holiday last week, returning late to the team. Al-Ittihad has not received any offers for the former France international forward, planning talks to address the matter. Despite scoring 12 goals in 20 appearances this season, Benzema faced criticism for his performances, and Al-Ittihad currently stands seventh in the league, 25 points behind the top position, which they secured last season.
The feasibility of Lyon bringing Benzema back to France remains uncertain. The forward previously won four consecutive league titles with Lyon from 2005-2008. Lyon currently faces financial difficulties and occupies the 16th position in Ligue 1, a relegation playoff spot. Owned by Eagle Football, a multiclub group initiated by American businessman John Textor, the club has undergone managerial changes, with Pierre Sage currently in charge after the dismissals of Fabio Grosso and Laurent Blanc.
