Mauritania’s Stunning Win Eliminates Algeria from Afcon Tue 23 Jan 2024 22.35 GMT
In yet another surprise upset at the Africa Cup of Nations, Mauritania secured a historic place in the last 16 by defeating 2019 champions Algeria 1-0 at the Stade de la Paix on Tuesday. Yali Dellahi’s first-half goal marked a significant victory for Mauritania, sending Algeria home with an early exit for the second consecutive tournament, following a similar disappointment in 2021.
Algeria, the 2019 trophy holders, appeared a mere shadow of their former selves. Even with the inclusion of captain Riyad Mahrez in the second half, Algeria failed to reverse their fortunes. Despite this, Mauritania’s triumph secures them a spot among the four best third-placed teams, ensuring a place in the knockout stage.
In other Group D action, Angola claimed the top spot by defeating Burkina Faso 2-0. Mabululu’s header in the 36th minute and Zini’s stoppage-time goal sealed the victory for Angola, finishing the group stage with seven points, while Burkina Faso secured second place with four points.
Group C witnessed a thrilling encounter as Cameroon staged a late comeback to secure a 3-2 victory against The Gambia, securing their place in the knockout stage. Christopher Wooh’s dramatic stoppage-time winner propelled Cameroon to second place in the group, narrowly beating Guinea on goals scored. The Gambia, suffering a third successive defeat, was eliminated.
Senegal, the defending champions, continued their strong performance in Group C, defeating Guinea 2-0. Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye scored in the second half, securing Senegal’s top position in the group with nine points. Cameroon finished second with four points, and Guinea advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.
The Africa Cup of Nations remains unpredictable and full of excitement as the tournament progresses to the knockout stage.
