WaveBreakers: Female Rowing Trio Shatters Records, Raises Over £80,000 in Epic Atlantic Race

In a remarkable display of strength, resilience, and determination, the female rowing trio known as the WaveBreakers has not only shattered records but also raised an impressive sum of over £80,000 for charity during their unprecedented journey across the Atlantic. Comprising Hatty Carder, Bobbie Mellor, and Katherine Antrobus, the WaveBreakers achieved the distinction of being recognized as the fastest women’s trio to row across the Atlantic, a feat that has captivated admirers and supporters alike.

Embarking on the challenging World’s Toughest Row, the trio faced the immense task of rowing a staggering 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands, Spain, to the Caribbean island of Antigua. The arduous journey, which commenced on December 13 and concluded 40 days, 10 hours, and 51 minutes later, tested the limits of the WaveBreakers physically and mentally.

Throughout their incredible odyssey, the team encountered numerous challenges, including a capsizing incident, tumultuous weather conditions, seasickness, and persistent issues with their water-maker. Undeterred by these obstacles, the WaveBreakers demonstrated unparalleled perseverance, overcoming each hurdle in their path.

Sharing their remarkable story on social media, the WaveBreakers documented the highs and lows of their World’s Toughest Row adventure. In an Instagram post, they revealed, “They were battered and bruised by the conditions, they capsized which meant they ended up in the back half of the fleet, their water-maker kept breaking down. But they overcame each and every obstacle thrown at them… and broke the world record in the process!”

Notably, the trio’s achievement goes beyond personal triumph, as they dedicated their remarkable journey to raising funds for two commendable causes—the WWF and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees climate change charities. Their fundraising efforts garnered substantial support, with telecommunications company Vodafone pledging to double donations up to the team’s target of £140,000.

Despite facing stormy weather, sleepless nights, and physical challenges, the WaveBreakers secured their place in history by not only becoming the 10th overall team in the race but also by setting a new world record as the fastest women’s trio to complete the challenging Atlantic crossing.
